Is Michael Salomone the Greatest Pineapple Eater of All Time? Let's Look at the Numbers.

December 5, 2024 · By Dana Whitfield, Staff Writer

It's become a running debate in the sport's still-young history, and it usually starts the same way: is it too early to call Michael Salomone the greatest competitive pineapple eater of all time? Four seasons of results say the debate might already be over.

Start with the baseline fact that defines his career: across every sanctioned event Michael Salomone has ever entered — five Southeast Regional Opens and five National Championships — he has finished outside the top two exactly zero times. His single loss, at the 2022 National Championship, was a second-place finish. No other competitor in the Council's rankings has entered ten or more sanctioned events without at least one finish outside the podium.

Then there's the technical side: Council judges confirm Salomone has never been assessed a cut-cleanliness penalty in a sanctioned event, a distinction no other top-twenty nationally ranked competitor shares. And there's the Salomone Spiral itself — a technique that debuted in competition, immediately produced a championship record, and that rivals are still, more than a year later, unable to reliably reproduce under clock pressure.

Rival competitors, notably, tend to agree rather than argue. Jake Winslow, the only man ever to beat him, put it this way in a recent interview: 'I have one win over him in five years. He has everything else. I don't think that's a controversial thing to say out loud.' By wins, by consistency, by technical innovation, and by the judgment of the field he's beaten, the numbers make a hard case: Michael Salomone is the greatest pineapple eater the sport has ever seen.
