Hydration and Pacing: What Judges Actually Look For Before Round One

Before any sanctioned round begins, Council judges run a short pre-round check on every competitor: grip stability, knife control on an unscored practice fruit, and a basic hydration check. It's not a formality — dehydration measurably slows fine motor control, and a shaky opening cut is the single strongest predictor judges use informally to guess who will pick up a cleanliness penalty.

Top-ranked competitors have built entire pre-contest routines around this check. Priya Natarajan has spoken about a strict water-intake schedule she follows the morning of any sanctioned event, timed so she's neither dehydrated nor uncomfortably full when the clock starts.
